The Critical Role of Personal Health in a
Healthy Marriage
by Denver J.
Hudson, Relationship Fitness Coach
If you have a goal of creating and enjoying a healthy
marriage, then it's important to begin with your personal health. It may not seem an
obvious connection at first, but your state of health at any given moment determines how you show up in your
marriage - and how you relate to your partner.
For example,
suppose that you come home from work exhausted and emotionally frustrated. From that particular
state of health, you will relate to your partner in a particular way. If this becomes a pattern - a habitual
way of showing up and relating - your marriage will eventually begin to suffer, and you'll have anything but
a healthy marriage.
Each of us has
a personality. And our personalities actually consists of many different "selves" - or expressions.
And guess what determines which part of you is expressing itself at any given moment? That's right - your
state of health! When your energy is low and your tension is high, for example, you will find yourself
showing up in an unhealthy state and as a result you will feel, think, and act differently. In fact, you will
SEE your partner in a different way based on your state of health at that given moment - and that means that
you will RELATE differently, which directly impacts the health of your marriage.
Furthermore,
each of our personalities has a range to it: unhealthy - average - and healthy. At each of these
levels, we show up as a different version of ourselves - thinking, feeling, and acting differently based on
which self is expressing at the moment. (Notice yourself and others in action and you'll see this playing out
in living color!) This is one of the reasons you literally feel like a different person when you go on
vacation. The weight of your regular responsibilities is lifted, you are more relaxed, and that allows a
different "self" to emerge, a self from the healthy range of your personality.
Many marriages
become weak and unstable when both partners find themselves relating from the low-average to
unhealthy range of their personalities. Imagine two people expressing and relating from the
unhealthy dimensions of their personalities, and yet desiring and attempting to create a healthy, happy, and
fulfilling marriage. It simply doesn't work.
This brings
us back around to your personal health. When you take care of your personal health in a
holistic way - focusing on your physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual health - then you are creating the
foundational health that will allow the healthy aspects of your personality to express themselves. From that
healthy place of showing up, you will interact with your partner in healthier ways, creating a healthy
marriage.
As you are
learning, creating vibrant health is not just about a slim figure or tone muscles or weighing a certain
amount of weight - it's much more than that! Vibrant health opens up the possibility of parts of you
to be expressed that simply can't be expressed when you are unhealthy. If you truly desire to have a healthy
marriage that is sustainable over time, and if you wish to open the higher aspects of who you are as a
person, then making a commitment to create vibrant, whole-person health is very
important.
